[Mini Review] Orange Marmalade 1-4

Posted on by Ilma

Aired: 6/12 episode

Cast: Yeo Jingoo, AOA's Seolhyun, CNBLUE's Lee Jonghyun

300 years ago, humans and vampires finalized a peace treaty, but they still do not get along well with each other. In the present day, Jae-Min (Yeo Jin-Goo) is a popular high school student. He falls in love with transfer student Baek Ma-Ri (AOA's Seolhyun). Baek Ma-Ri though hides her true identity as a vampire.

Review (so far):

The first and second episodes are good, but the pace is messy and too fast. The pace is still bearable in ep 1 and 2 but in ep 3 and 4, I can't help but keep thinking "How do we get from here to there so suddenly." It feels like a lot of plot points are missing and I feel like I have skipped an episode every time I start watching a new episode even though I haven't. I haven't watch the sageuk part yet, but I heard it's not that bad, I'm planning to watch the rest of the series after I finish my final exams.

Other than the pace, I'm still not sure if I like the storyline or not. Watching the first and second episode, I thought that the story will be mostly the same with the webtoon, but after those episodes, it's actually different. Apparently there is three part in the drama, ep 1-4 is modern era, ep 5-8 are sageuk era, and ep 9-12 will go back to the modern era. It's not a bad thing to change things up, but it makes people confused since the transitions feel like they come out of nowhere.

The writers use too much coincidences to get the plot moving and it's frustrating to watch. In the end I only think that they need to put Jaemin in a bubble or something since he keeps getting hurt.

If I compare it to the webtoon, I like the webtoon much more. In the drama, they erase Mari's friends, Soori and Woomi. There is a character named Soori in the drama, but she is just a classmate and not Mari's friends. It's a pity since the thing I love the most about the webtoon is the ladies' friendship instead of the romance. I also don't see the point of switching Jaemin's mom and step dad's roles. It's like they want to give all the important parts to the male characters and push the female characters aside.

I also think they screw up some of the characters, especially Jaemin and Ahra. I can't like Jaemin at all in the drama, too self-centered and I can't understand him at all, while in the webtoon I can understand Jaemin. Even if I didn't read the webtoon, I don't think I will be able to like Jaemin. While Ahra, while her character is still pretty annoying in the webtoon, but she is not totally annoying. She is funny and a good comic relief, and I like reading about her. I like seeing her grow to like Mari and her friends (even though reluctantly). In the end, she wins me over. But her character in the drama is just annoying and hateful, just a typical second lead. Mari, I think, is the same with the webtoon version, only the webtoon version has more sass and spices. The only character in the drama I like better than the webtoon version is Shihoo, I care about the drama Shihoo much more than the webtoon Shihoo.

I don't find any problems with the acting. I think Seolhyun is decent as Mari, though she sometimes makes me bored and feels plain. I'm not sure if it's the acting or the character, like I say before the Mari in the drama doesn't have much spices. Yeo Jingoo is good, as usual, too bad his character is annoying me. I am surprised with Jonghyun though, he is really good as Shihoo and he embodies his character well.

So far I don't think I like the drama since they don't explain a lot of plot points and I end up confused with a lot of things. But I will try to watch until it finishes to fully judge the drama.
